World Computer Literacy Day 2012 by IEI, Jharkhand State Center

The Institution of Engineers (India), Jharkhand State centre, observed the World Computer Literacy Day on 1st December, 2012 at Engineers Bhawan, Nepal Kothi Campus, Ranchi. Er. Chandrakat Raipat, Chairman of IEI, Jharkhand State Centre welcomed the august gathering and shared his experiences in gaining computer literacy in day to day life on regular basis. Chief Guest Er. T.K. Biswas, Head of IT Department of MECON, Ranchi expressed the necessity of Computer Literacy and enlightened the guests on future of Computer and Information Technology. Er. Biswas emphasized the importance of the computer literacy day as conventional literacy would not be enough, computer literacy would be key to deal with professional and personal aspects of life. Er. M.T. Pandian, Sr. Manger (IT-Services), MECON, Ranchi, the Guest of Honor in the programme, presented the theme “Good Computer Security Practices” followed by a Quiz to Ladies and Children. The presentation encompassed with information on various security measures to secure the data, information and hardware including wireless technologies from attacker and understanding the importance of IT Security. Er. Indranil Sen, Immediate past Hony. Secretary, IEI, Jharkhand State Centre proposed vote of thanks and the programme was convened by Er. K.C. Padhy of MECON.

  1. The meeting was presided over by Er. K.K. Mehrotra, FIE, Chairman, Jharkhand State Centre and CMD, MECON Limited. He also delivered Welcome Address.
  2. Annual Report for the period of April 2011 – March 2012 was presented by outgoing Hony. Secretary Er. Indranil Sen, and it was adopted unanimously.
  3. The outgoing Chairman Er. K.K. Mehrotra announced the name of new team headed by Er. Chandrakant Raipat as New Chairman and Er. Subrata Mukherjee as New Hony. Secretary.

They also honoured Shri S L Garg, Imm Past President, Shri G. Prabhakar and Prof. Samiran Choudhury, Past Presidents of IEI.

26th National Convention of Agricultural Engineers

The Udaipur Local Centre of the Institution in association with College of Technology & Engineering (CTAE), Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology (MPUAT), Udaipur organized the Twenty-sixth National Convention of Agricultural Engineers during February 15-16, 2013, at Udaipur. The Chief Guest, Dr Om Prakash Gill, Vice Chancellor, MPUAT, Udaipur inaugurated the Convention by lighting the lamps along with other dignitaries present on the occasion. Dr Gill congratulated the Centre for selecting such an interesting topic for deliberation. Further, he emphasized on food security problems in the country and requested the upcoming agricultural engineers to go with the more research work on this arena. Dr Gill also highlighted on the mechanisation strategies of agricultural sectors more appropriately. Dr N C Patel, Vice Chancellor, Junagarh University, Gujarat was the Guest-of-Honour on this occasion. Dr Patel mainly stressed upon the modern monitoring strategies on seed rate in the agricultural sectors and also drawn attention to the applications of latest technologies like possibilities of using robotics techniques in agricultural machineries for the purpose of irrigation. Mr D V Nagabhushan, Chairman, Agricultural Engineering Division Board of the Institution presided over the inaugural session. In his address, Mr Nagabhushan spoke about the crop plant management implementation, where precision agriculture has to be taken care of. Dr N S Rathore, Dean, CTAE, MPUAT, Udaipur described how the artificial intelligence can be implemented in agricultural sectors for getting high accuracy. Even, he also stressed on the microprocessors based approach towards precision agriculture, especially in the area of harvesting. Earlier, Dr Y C Bhatt, Chairman of the Centre, delivered the welcome address and in his address he focused on the possibility of utilising the GIS technology for sustainable food production with the help of precision agriculture. Dr Deepak Sharma, Organising Secretary of the function elaborated the theme. Dr C R Mehta, Project Coordinator, Farm Implements and Machinery, Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Bhopal, delivered the “Rathindra Nath Tagore” Memorial Lecture on the topic. On this occasion seven Eminent Engineering personalities namely, Dr N C Patel, Dr T C Thakur, ICAR National Professor, Department of Farm Power Machinery & Power Engineering, College of Technology, G B Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand (in absentia), Prof R C Purohit, Department of Soil & Water Engineering Department, CTAE, MPUAT, Udaipur, Dr N S Rathore, Dr Y C Bhatt, Project Incharge (FIM), Department of Farm Machinery & Power, CTAE, MPUAT, Udaipur, Mr Madan Chhajed, Executive Engineer, Water Shed Development & Soil Conservation, Govt. of Rajasthan, Udaipur and Dr C R Mehta were felicitated in recognition of their eminence and contribution to the profession of Agricultural Engineering. The IEI Young Engineers Award in Agricultural Engineering discipline for the year 2012-13 was presented to Mr Sanwal Singh Meena, Assistant Professor, Department of Farm Machinery & Power Engineering, CTAE, MPUAT, Udaipur, Dr R Thiyagarajan, Assistant Professor, Department of Farm Machinery & Bio-energy Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, Tamilnadu Agricultural University, Trichy and Mr Sandip Mandal, Scientist, Division of Agricultural Engineering, ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region, Meghalaya. Mr Syed Irshad Ali, Honorary Secretary of the Centre proposed the Vote of Thanks. A National Seminar on the theme ‘Precision Agriculture for Sustainable Food Production’ was also organized concurrently as a part of the Convention wherein papers on various sub-themes were presented by delegates from academia as well as industry during the various technical sessions.

Twenty-eighth National Convention of Environmental Engineers

Bihar State Centre of IEI organized the 28th National Convention of Environmental Engineers during March 9-10, 2013 at Patna. The Chief Guest, Mr Uday Narain Choudhary, Hon’ble Speaker, Bihar Legislative Assembly inaugurated the Convention by lighting the lamps along with other dignitaries present on the occasion. Mr Choudhary congratulated the Centre for selecting such an illuminating topic for this occasion. He highlighted about the proper sanitation in the society and a brief on strategic plan of action based on which Govt. or NGO or any other private sectors can work. Further, he stressed on the waste management in healthcare systems. Mr J C Singhal, Chairman, ENDB of the Institution presided over the inaugural session. In his address, Mr Singhal spoke about the background of various technical activities on environmental engineering under the Institution and also he highlighted about the necessity of proper healthcare system in India using waste management methodologies. Earlier, Mr J K Dutta, Chairman of the Centre, delivered the welcome address and in his address he focused on the controlling processes of hazardous wastes in various urban, sub-urban as well as rural parts of the country. Dr Arun Kumar Shrivastava, Convenor, Technical Committee and Council Member of the Institution during this occasion chaired the inaugural Session and gave a brief introduction about the theme of the Convention. He further talked about the affects of hazardous wastes towards human health and its impact to the society. Dr Shrivastava has also given emphasize on the traditional methods of using plastics, toxic materials and other related substances & their poor impact to the environment. On this occasion four Eminent Engineering personalities namely, Prof Md Jawed, Dept of Civil Engg, IIT, Guwahati, Mr Paritosh C Tyagi, Former Chairman, CPCB, Mr Anil Kumar Sharma, Chief Engineer, Chhatisgarh Environment Conservation Board and Prof S C Prasad, Dept of Civil Engg, MNNIT, Allahabad (in absentia) were felicitated in recognition of their eminence and contribution to the profession of Environmental Engg. Mr Tyagi spoke about the household hazardous materials to the environment and suggested on the recycling options on these used substances. Prof (Dr) Arun Kumar, Director, Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna has given the State-of-the Art Lecture on the theme and briefed about the Constitutional Act of protecting environment. The prestigious “N V Modak Memorial Lecture” was delivered by Prof R C Sinha, Former Chairman, BSPCB on the topic, “Waste Management with Special Reference to Biomedical Waste”. The “IEI Young Engineers Award” in Environmental Engg discipline for the year 2012-13 was presented to Dr Vimal Chandra Shrivastava, Assistant Professor, Dept of Chemical Engg, IIT, Roorkee. Mr B K Sahay, Honorary Secretary of the Centre proposed the Vote of Thanks. A National Seminar on the theme ‘Hazardous Waste Management and Healthcare in India’ was also organized concurrently as a part of the Convention.
